Intent

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

At Blenheim Park Academy, we use Science Bug to enhance the children’s understanding of the subject. We believe that learning is magnified and solidified when children are able to experience, rather than just report. Children receive a high quality education which includes all ranges of Science: Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Learning is linked to real life so children can see how scientific discovery has shaped and changed their lives. Children learn scientific knowledge as well as skills through practical activities, which is inclusive of all children within the class. Many sequences of learning begin with a Quest Question which children concentrate on answering by the end of the sequence. Children work in groups or independently to allow them to create their own hypotheses and test whether predictions are correct. Children become confident learners who are given opportunities to talk to a range of people about their discoveries.

Implementation

What do we teach? What does this look like?

Science is taught in blocks and are linked (where possible) to the overarching umbrella topic of the school. Objectives have been broken down and additional objectives added to ensure that children achieve their milestones by the end of each year group and key stage. Sequences are progressive and link (and reference) to past and future learning, giving children more context to their learning. Work is recorded using class books that include pictures, examples of work, quotes, group discoveries and videos (via QR codes). Teachers assess children using evidence in their individual books. At the end of each unit, teachers assess children's acquisition of scientific knowledge and development of skills in working scientifically.

 Impact

What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will:

Children build upon their knowledge and skills from Reception to Year 6 and past and future learning is referenced to when applicable. Lessons are practical and as engaging as possible to ensure that children’s knowledge of Science is committed to their long term memory. The way the lessons are run also ensure that no child is put at a disadvantage and all children within the class can access all of the learning. The language rich curriculum puts an emphasis on wellbeing and social understanding in order to enable social equity.
