Intent

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

Our History curriculum aims to inspire pupils to be curious and creative thinkers who develop a complex knowledge of local and national history and the history of the wider world. We want pupils to develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and be able to explain and
analyse historical evidence.

We aim to build an awareness of significant events and individuals in global, British and local history and recognise how things have changed over time. History will support children to appreciate the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups. Studying History allows children to appreciate the many reasons why people may behave in the way they do, supporting children to develop empathy for others while providing an opportunity to learn from mankind’s past mistakes.

The curriculum aims to support pupils in building their understanding of chronology, making connections over periods of time, develop understanding of how historians study the past and prepare pupils for their future learning by introducing them to key substantive concepts including power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, achievements of humankind, society and culture.

Implementation

What do we teach? What does it look like?

The History curriculum emphasises the importance of historical knowledge and is shaped by the following disciplinary approaches.

• Change and continuity.
• Cause and consequence.
• Similarities and differences.
• Historical significance.
• Historical interpretations.
• Sources of evidence.

These strands are interwoven through the teaching units to create engaging and enriching learning experiences.

Three History units are taught over an academic year on a two year cylce. We adapt and use the study units in the KAPOW Primary curriculum, to ensure coverage of both knowledge and progression of skills as well as giving children opportunities to apply their developing vocabulary.

Knowledge organisers to accompany each unit are designed to include:

  • key individuals/events
  • a timeline to place the period being studied
  • key vocabulary

Where possible, local links are highlighted, physical resources provided and opportunities made for visits and visitors to enhance learning.

Impact

What will this look like by the time they leave?

Through the study of history, our children will have a good knowledge and understanding of:

  • Chronology: British, local and world history
  • Historically significant events, people and changes
  • Historical interpretations
  • Historical enquiry and investigations
  • Organising and communicating about the past

Our planning and delivery of History enables pupils to be enquiring learners who ask questions and can make suggestions about where to find the evidence to answer the question. They will be critical and analytical thinkers who are able to make informed and balanced judgements based on their knowledge of the past.
